SVU opens with win

The win is the first career victory for new Southern Virginia football coach Mike Smith.

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- Hayes Page took a pass from Luke Taylor and ran 35 yards down the sideline to score the winning touchdown with 13.7 seconds remaining in Southern Virginia's 42-35 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday at Steele Stadium.

The win marks the first career victory for head coach Mike Smith and the first time the Knights have won a season opener.

On the final play, Taylor was nearly sacked but escaped and found Page wide open on the left side of the field.

"I made a little move to the left to get away and got it to our playmaker," Taylor said. "Hayes made the catch and took care of the rest."

"I'm really proud of the way our guys finished the game," Smith said. "The offense played really well and made the big plays when we needed them. It's a good way to start the season, but we still have a lot to work on. Now it's time to get ready for Guilford."

McKay Dunn and Taylor, a junior transfer from Mesa (Ariz.) Community College playing in his first game for SVU rewrote the record book.

Taylor completed 26 passes for 541 yards and six touchdowns, all school records. Dunn finished with 10 receptions for 268 yards and three touchdown receptions, both school records.

Page finished the game with 21 rushes for 64 yards and three receptions for 52 yards and one touchdown. As a team, the Knights finished with 633 yards of total offense, a school record.
